What are some of the cruel things the German army did to the people and places in Belarus in World War II?
Consider how it would be like to live in such a place where fear is the order of the day. It was the case in Belarus when the country was occupied by German Nazis in the course of the Second World War. It was transformed into one of the most unsafe spots on the map.
The Nazis did not only have intentions of conquering the territory but also that of exterminating the population that was already there and they did it using extreme violence.
They rounded up all the Jewish families first and enclosed them into small and walled-off camps. There they were fire at in large groups, publicly and without discrimination. They also murdered lots of non-Jews. The German soldiers incinerated at least thousands of villages, forcing people into their houses or barns and then setting them on fire. Consequently, a third of the entire population in Belarus perished in the three years of war-an unfortunate event.
Daily life became a struggle. The army confiscated every food leaving many starving. Youthful men and women were brought to Germany and made to work as laborers. Anyone who fought back was brutally retaliated and in many cases the whole village was killed as a result of the resistance. The population was torn apart by the warfare between the soldiers and the brutal German army and was under a constant threat.
