In a small village in Iran, Suraiya's family lives: her husband, two daughters, and two sons.

Her husband suddenly falls in love with a fourteen-year-old girl, and the desire to marry her overwhelms him in exchange for marrying the girl, Suraiya's husband agrees to cover the medical expenses of her ailing father. But in the meantime, he finds it difficult to bring in a new wife while already having one, and he's also worried about the increased expenses. Then Suraiya's husband hatches a plan. He strikes a deal with the village headman and spreads a rumor about his wife.

The rumor was that, "his wife is having an affair with someone else."To bolster this rumor, they even create false witnesses by threatening or luring certain individuals. As a result, Suraiya's guilt is quickly proven. According to the law, Suraiya is sentenced to death.

The death penalty was horrific. A pit was dug in public on the road. Suraiya's hands and feet were tied. She was buried waist-deep in the pit. Earth was piled around her. Then, from a distance, stones were thrown at Suraiya's body. Suraiya's father was forced to throw the first stone. Then, Suraiya's two sons were forced to throw stones at their mother.

Then, everyone gathered there threw stones. After a long, continuous stone-throwing, the ground around Suraiya turned red and blood began to drip. Her body stopped moving. Then her husband looked at Suraiya's blood-stained face, lying on her stomach, and checked to see if she was alive. Suraiya was alive despite her injuries. She opened her eyes. Realizing she wasn't dead, everyone in the village, including her husband, picked up the blood-stained stones lying around Suraiya and began pelting them again. That's when Suraiya died.

This heartbreaking story was written in 1990 by an Iranian author named Fridouni Sahebzam. Iran banned the book. Based on a true story, it became an international bestseller. In 2008, the book was adapted for the screen for the first time, as a film titled "The Stoning of Suraiya M."Meanwhile, the day after Suraiya's death, the ailing father of the fourteen-year-old girl chosen by her husband also died. As a result, the marriage, which was supposed to be arranged in exchange for the girl's medical expenses, was not consummated... continue reading
