Many years ago my fourth grade son came home after school and told me they had learned about the Buffalo Soldiers that day. That's great I said, what did you learn? “The plains Indians named them that for their great stamina and courage". Well that's not right I told him. “But it's right here in the book". I looked and sure enough, there it was in the state issued textbook in black and white.
I didn't immediately take issue with it, but a couple of weeks later. I met his teacher at an open house and explained to her as I had explained to my son that the Indians called them that because their dark skin and curly hair reminded them of the buffalo. She looked a little embarrassed and said she had to follow the book.
The ‘Buffalo Soldiers' notably, served with distinction under grueling circumstances and deserve a place of honor in HONEST history. There's no need to change history and soften things up to try and make sure no feelings get hurt. History is History, facts are facts, even if they are uncomfortable sometimes.
