How about somewhere around three days?
A fellow, reading the newspapers about a terrible war and the combat, saw something that everybody else missed. “How do you get to enemy soldiers that are dug in and cannot be shot?” Field artillery wasn’t designed for this kind of fighting.
He sat down & thought it out. He took a pipe, welded an end on it, added a ball socket onto a square metal plate, and welded a matching steel ball on the end of the pipe.
Then he designed a small bomb with a propellant and contact fuse on one end. Drop the bomb down the pipe, the small explosive detonates when it hits the end, and the bomb pops out and goes about 100 yards and drops down on the dug-in enemy. Kaboom!
He presented it to the Army Ordinance folks. They asked him to do a small change and then after some political pressure, accepted it.
