Hitler chose to k*i-l*l himself when he heard about the death of Benito Mussolini. The Führerbunker was informed of the news on April 29, 1945. The war was lost and Soviet forces rolled in to Berlin.
Hitler was informed that Italian partisans had killed Mussolini and his girlfriend. What came after the execution however, shocked him. The body of Mussolini was ordered to Piazzale Loreto Milan, where he was suspended, upside-down, on a metal scaffold. The people on the ground were urged to scream at the bodies and mutilate them.
Hitler was terrified with the spectacle. He was quite a secretive man and he still respected Mussolini. The humiliation of his ally before a crowd of people brought him to the very worst nightmare he had of becoming a prisoner of his enemy. He could not tolerate the thought of his own body being taken, shown and violated.
The disgraceful death of Mussolini drove Hitler to a conclusion. He said to the companions that he would not be taken, in body and soul. His body must be burnt to ashes.
This was the moment that determined his decision. Hitler died on April 30, 1945.
