What is a piece of advice you received that you initially ignored, but now realize was 100% correct?
In my younger years, I dated this fellow for about 6 months. Then I remembered the advice my father gave me.
“David” was pleasant and generous. I grew to like him quite a lot. But there was one issue that became apparent fairly early on. Our talks revolved entirely around him. My 5% contributions were responding to what he said.
There was one incident that weakened the relationship. The second incident was the deal breaker.

I was knee deep in suffering and sorrow (I no longer remember what it was) so he said to meet him for coffee and we’d talked. Yes—we talked—about him. Why did I have the mistaken impression that we were to discuss my deep suffering and sorrow?
Then came the deal breaker. He commented that a scarf he’d seen at a shop would look very nice on me. Why did that sentence lead me to believe he was going to buy it for me? Well, he didn’t. He brought up the scarf subject two weeks later and said he decided to buy it for someone in his family instead. Now, I don’t know how that would impact you but I took it silently and rather badly. In fact, it truly hurt my feelings. He didn’t have to mention the scarf. I would have forgotten about it or decided it was a passing remark. He could have purchased two scarves giving one to the family member and one to me. So, this was my theory. He said it to hurt me. And it did. Remember that old saying: Even a dog knows the difference between being tripped over and kicked”. Well, I’d been kicked.
That’s when I remembered what my father said. It’s better to be lonely than unhappy. That’s also when I ended the relationship.
