The Dirlewanger Brigade is the best example of how crazy the Eastern Front was during the Second World War. The Regular German officers in the Wehrmacht were obsessed with strict military rules. But this SS unit, headed by a convicted criminal named Oskar Dirlewanger with zero rules. It was basically just a gang of wild murderers, rapists and crazy inmates who were taken straight out of prison. Believe me or not, for the Nazi regime which was already committing terrible crimes, this particular group was too extreme for them.
Dirlewanger basically headed the unit and ruled like a brutal old dictator. He was a heavy drinker at all times and beat his own soldiers with big wooden sticks. He just shot anyone on the spot who upset him without any trial.
But what they did in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising deeply shocked regular German commanders. During the Wola district massacre, they did not even fight the real rebels. Instead they terrorized innocent people. They went to hospitals and bayoneted babies in cribs and killed patients in beds. They also forced whole villages into barns and set them on fire and they shot anyone who tried to crawl out.
The Nazi General named Heinz Guderian reported directly to Hitler, saying this extreme brutality backfired strategically because it made the Polish people rebels fight to the death, killing regular German soldiers. An SS judge named Morgen even tried to arrest Dirlewanger for injecting women with poison for fun. The unit was guarded by high Nazis but justice caught Dirlewanger in June 1945. The Polish guards recognized him in a camp and beat him to death.
