John Wayne and Sammy Davis Jr were very good friends. Wayne was noted for his Westerns, Sammy, not so much. However, in 1962 Sammy got his chance on a horse in the Rat Pack picture, Sergeants 3. He was thrilled when John Wayne gave him one of his well worn hats.
Sammy said later, “When there was finally a role calling for a Negro cowboy, John Wayne gave me the hat he’d worn in ‘Stagecoach’ for luck in playing it. He said, ‘I didn’t let my kids touch this Stetson. It’s very dear to me. But I guess you’ll be able to find a home for it.’ I’m proud to have had his friendship.’’
I think though Sammy was wrong about the hat’s provenance. Most movie historians say it came from, Rio Bravo. The hat he wore in Stagecoach was completely different.
Wayne again proved his friendship years later when Sammy was being heckled by a tough audience. Unknown to the audience Wayne had just arrived with his son Patrick. When he saw what was happening he went on stage to give Sammy a hug. The audience went wild and Sammy had a great night after that.
