In August 1942, life in the Croatian concentration camp run by the fascist Ustaše was extremely harsh. One night, some guards held a terrible GAME in which they competed to kill the most prisoners till morning.
A guard named Petar Brzica won this cruel game. Using a curved blade used for cutting wheat, he murdered 1360 people that night. As a reward, he received a gold watch, some silver, a roasted pig, AND wine.
During the killing, Brzica could not frighten an elderly man named Vukašin Mandrapa. Looking Brzica directly into his eyes while torturing him, the old man said, "Do your job, child".According to witnesses, those calm words left Brzica shaken, and he stopped attacking Mandrapa and walked away.
At the end of World War II in 1945, many war criminals fled Europe to avoid trials for their crimes. Brzica also managed to escape, changed his name and identity, and moved to the United States.
In 1970s, Jewish organization HANDED the American government with the list of hidden Nazis living in the USA. Brzica was also on that list. However, despite these efforts, he remained hidden and escaped punishment.
