I always think that since Hitler made the decision to implement the Final Solution that he had to have actually been in the camps to see what was happening. But that is wrong, Hitler never visited a death camp, and never saw the gas chambers. He hung far away from places like Auschwitz and Dachau even though he gave the orders.
He behaved like a CEO who had an office and the others did the hard work. He was filling his time at his mountain home, The Eagle's Nest, or in underground bunkers, and leaving the hard work to people like Heinrich Himmler.
A very famous story is that Himmler, the head of the SS, proceeded to a mass execution in 1941. When there was blood splattered on his coat he almost fainted because he couldn't handle it. Rather than halt the killings, he chose they had to find a cleaner way to kill people so the guards would not be disgusted. That is why they included gas chambers, it was done to make the killing look like a factory, not like a shooting.
The worst part was that as Germany was losing the war, Hitler did not slow down. He attempted to accelerate the killing. The German army requires trains to transport military men and tanks to the battle field. Hitler replied no and wanted to get the trains moving to transport prisoners instead.
He retained his plan till the end in 1945. Killing only ceased when the gates of the camp were broken open by Allied and Soviet troops. Hitler never went bad or apologized, he just lost power and died painfully.
