I was reading about World War 2 in Germany and read about some really bizarre facts about what people drank then. It wasn't like today at all.
All the prices were frozen by the government in 1936 since they did not want inflation to occur. So even by 1944, a drink cost the same as it did years before. They had currency known as Reichsmark.
The most interesting thing is Fanta. The majority of the population is unaware of the fact that Fanta was created due to the war. Germany had been fond of Coca-Cola and with the advent of the war, they could no longer obtain the secret syrup distributed by America. The guy in charge of the factories Max Keith, had to get creative so he wouldn't go out of business. He used some left over food stuff, such as apple mush and the whey produced during the production of cheese to make a new soda. It is rather ugly, a bottle cost only 15 pfennigs. Real sugar was extremely difficult to get and so people used Fanta to sweeten their cakes or even when they were preparing foods.
Beer was around but it wasn't very good. It cost about 40 pfennigs for a glass but the army took all the high-quality grain to feed the soldiers. That was watery and weak beer. And real coffee? That totally disappeared. People had to drink ersatz coffee which was made from roasted acorns or barley. I suppose it was a horrible taste. Or you had to spend a ton of money on the black market or sell your cigarettes to get real coffee.
