Joe Louis defended his title an astounding 25 times over a span of 12 years. His record was 69 wins and 3 losses. One of those losses he avenged and 2 of the losses came after his retirement. The eye test tells you how good he was in both offense and defensive skills. He had good hand speed and real power. Great ring IQ, a solid chin and exceptional fundamentals.
Ali’s record was 56–5. Three of those losses were avenged and the 2 other losses were when Ali was sick with the beginning of Parkinson’s disease. His record was astounding, considering that most people recognize that he fought in the best era of the heavyweight division of all time. The eye test on Ali is just crazy. His speed and footwork were unmatched along with his ring IQ. His reflexes a thing of legend. He had a cast iron chin and half of his career was followed by a long lay off because of the war.
