Why did some American soldiers end up shooting German guards without orders after liberating concentration camps?
You want to know why the Americans shot Nazi guards at Dachau in 1945. I can tell you because I lived through those times by reading books about it. The American boys were not bad people. What they saw was just too much for them to handle.
Before they even went into the camp they found a train on the tracks with forty cars of dead bodies. These people were starved to death. Many of the soldiers were very young and they just started to cry. They had never seen anything like this before.
Then they went into the camp. They saw the prisoners who looked like skeletons. The SS guards looked healthy and clean, like they did not care about it.
The American soldiers just got so angry. In a coal yard one young American soldier lost it and started shooting a machine gun at the captured guards. Other American soldiers joined him. His commander, named Sparks, had to run over and kick him to make him stop. But it was too late many guards were already dead. In other places the Americans gave guns and shovels to the Dachau prisoners to kill the guards. They let them have their revenge.
Later General Patton burned the reports about this. He knew his men reached their limit after seeing terrible things. When you see something terrible, you just do not think about the rules of war anymore. The Dachau camp was a place, and what happened there was just terrible.
