It is an interesting question to answer since most people believe that the German army was a single happy team but that is not the case. I have read a lot about this and the truth is that the high generals were mostly very rich and noble and they went to the best schools and they viewed war as a game of chess and they looked at Hitler as a low class man with no real education. They used to call him the bohemian corporal behind his back because they thought he was just a lucky amateur.
The actual trouble began in Russia. Generals such as Guderian would have liked to move quickly and be clever but hitler would not allow them. he had this insane rule that no one could ever retreat. a well-known example is of stalingrad. General Paulus was completely surrounded and his men had no food and no winter clothes but hitler would not allow them to leave. he even made paulus a high rank at the last moment
And also hitler did not like to hear the truth about the number of tanks and planes the enemy had. When a general would show him real numbers he would just scream and say it was a fake. he began to shoot his smartest men, and accuse them of everything. By 1944 the generals knew that he was going to destroy the whole country and that is why they tried to kill him with a bomb. He was not a genius, he was a danger to everyone.
