This is a great question, we’re talking ‘land war’ right? So i’ll omit Admirals and Air Marshals. I think there were great generals on all sides, all with different qualities. Many consider the German generals the best, especially Rommel, Guderian, Keitel, Jodl, Von Manstein, Model, Sepp Dietrich because they were responsible for the invention of a new kind of very effective form of warfare ‘Blitzkrieg’ that was soon, copied by all belligerents. To be an effective general, you had to be a bad guy, and if you were in the German, Russian or Japanese Army, you could get away with having your insubordinates shot or giving out extremely bad punishment.
You could not get away with this in the armies of democracy, remember the furore when Patton hit a solider who had PTSD? A German general or Russian Generals could easily get away with executing men on the spot for not carrying out an order or simply disagreeing with him. So, the generals of dictatorships had this advantage over Allied generals.
However, simply being able to shoot insubordinates didn’t make you a great leader, in fact, leading by fear alone, would make you a bad general, but, having that factor would ensure your orders were carried out without question. The skills a great general needed were ; leadership, being able to inspire, a great strategist, the ability to empathise with his soldiers, leading from the front, not 20miles being the action, drinking wine in a French chateau, and also, ingenuity, adapting to new environments.
Of all the generals of world war two, if I was to come up with a shortlist, would be as follows; for Russia Georgy Zhukov. For the US ; George Patton, For Germany ; Erwin Rommel, For GB & Commonwealth Bill Slim, For Japan; Tomojuki Yamashita, For France ; Charles de Gaulle. That is the major belligerents covered. Others worth a mention are Carl Gustav of Finland. If I had to pick the best one. I would go for.
General Georgy Zhukov - why, he was the mastermind behind the destruction of the Wehrmacht. 80% of German land forces where to perish facing the Armies under the command of Zhukov.
