The most underrated and genuinely unsettling criminal, in my opinion.
Danny LaPlante fits the bill perfectly. He was only 15 to 17 during this whole ordeal, came from a rough upbringing, but was disturbingly creepy regardless.
At 15, he went on a single date with a girl who quickly decided she wasn't interested in anything further. She moved on with her life, likely forgetting about him entirely.
Some time later, that same girl and her family, she lived with her sister and dad, started experiencing what seemed like paranormal activity in their home: objects moving, strange knocking, unsettling messages appearing on the walls. Her father didn't buy any of it, assuming his daughters were just seeking attention since he worked constantly and their mother had passed away.
After months of this escalating, the father got a call at work one day and came home to find his daughters sobbing hysterically at a neighbor's house, refusing to go back inside. That's when he realized something was genuinely wrong and decided to investigate. Walking into the house, he found messages scrawled on the walls, something along the lines of "I'm home, come find me." Moving further through the house, he noticed things disturbed and out of place, and a photo of his 15-year-old daughter with a knife stabbed through it. Hearing noise coming from her room, he went in and found someone wearing his deceased wife's wedding dress. When the figure turned around, it was Danny LaPlante, decked out in the wedding dress with face paint and holding an axe. Danny burst into unsettling laughter, and the father fled the house immediately, slamming the door behind him and calling 911 while he and a neighbor kept watch from outside.
When police arrived, they found the house completely empty, which was baffling since nobody had seen Danny leave. Then one of the daughters noticed a large cabinet shifting slightly. Officers moved it and discovered a hole leading into the wall, revealing an entire hidden tunnel system running through the house, complete with peepholes throughout. They found Danny hiding inside, laughing eerily. It turned out he'd secretly been living inside the walls of their home for MONTHS.
He was arrested and tried as an adult, which meant he was eligible for bail. Two years later, while still out on bail, he murdered a woman and her young children inside their own home. They lived near woods behind his mother's property, and investigators believe he'd been watching the family for some time before the killings.
Today, he's serving a life sentence, and every appeal he's filed has been denied.
