There has never been a good portrayal of Tarzan that dealt with all the implications of making a white European the King of the Jungle while portraying Africans around him as irredeemably violent and ignorant savages.
The clear message of Burroughs in his books is white supremacist. Put a white man, or even a baby, in any environment and he will be dominant by instinct and natural right. But the Africans there for tens of thousands of years are trapped in barbarism. Not just Africans, because there was a Tarzan film with a similar theme for South America.
Hollywoods way of coping with this message over time became do not mention it. Instead make it family friendly and fun, show a white jungle family with Jane and Boy. Should I even have to point white supremacy should not be made family friendly?
Christopher Lambert did play a Tarzan in a film that was trying to realistically show a boy raised by apes. That he probably would have had sexual experiences with them was left out, understandably. And so was dealing with the original Social Darwinism argument. One other film in 2016 does show Tarzan as fighting genocide in the Congo, which is brave.
Of course the series could just show Tarzan as African instead of European.
