In my boot camp company we were also adverse for volunteering for anything, knowing from past experiences and standard beliefs that it would almost always suck. When they asked if anyone could play a musical instrument, I could not help myself since I was good at playing woodwinds since 2nd grade and I felt my hand shoot up autonomically.
Our hard core Company Commander, in his ‘nice voice’, grudgingly said:
“ Ok, you are in the band now. Go to band practice instead of morning physical training for the rest of basic training and get your uniform ready to go to Atlantic City to welcome Bob Hope home from the USO tour. They need the band, pronto, and it is at low strength and in need of immediate replacements”.
We quickly practiced-up “Thanks, For the Memories” and in about three days could get through it without falling apart. We arrived by bus and played the song, then our anthem, and Bob Hope shook 30 hands with every man in the band, then we were marched back on the bus, but we got to stand around in the casino at parade rest in formation for about ten minutes which was supremely superior to any activity back at base.
A tuba player somehow managed to bring back a pack of contraband cigarettes and three ‘illegal’ cans of Coca-Cola. I scored a forbidden Snickers bar! Some of the gamblers were keen to slip us various items and the band leader was distracted by a mini-skirted cocktail waitress. Bob Hope was sure a nice guy.
