What were the reactions of Nazi SS officers living in Berlin when they saw the advance of Red Army troops into Berlin (1945)?
In Berlin in 1945, SS officers were not acting in the manner of heroes. Most were very scared. They knew the Soviets hated them because of the bad things that happened on the Eastern Front. They understood that if they were caught, they would probably be killed immediately.
The most important is about their tattoos. Every SS-officer had a blood type tattoo on his left arm. When the Soviet tanks came into the city, these officers did not always fight. Many hid in the basements, and used knives or acid to try to cut the tattoo out of their skin. They were so frightened that a Russian soldier should see the mark and shoot them. They discarded their expensive uniforms and stole old civilian clothes in order to disguise their true identity.
While the younger soldiers still were engaged in the fighting in the streets, most of the high-ranking officers of the German forces were capitulating. Many stories tell of them cramming in bunkers and sipping through a lot of wine because they knew it was over. One moment they acted as if they were better than everybody, the next, they cried or searched for cyanide pills so they would not be captured.
The oddest thing about that is that they suddenly wanted to find the Americans. Even though the Russians were only a few blocks away the SS officers looked on maps of the West. They were hoping that if they ran far enough the US Army would save them. In their final hours in Berlin they attempted to find a way to sneak past the Soviet lines and surrender to the West instead. By the end, these elite men were only scared people hiding in subway tunnels and praying that no one would recognize them.
