In 1978, Jefferson Airplane/Starship vocalist Grace Slick got drunk on stage at a concert in Hamburg, Germany, called the audience " Nazis ," assaulted band members and audience members, and was subsequently fired—an incredibly unimaginable event, as if The Who suddenly fired Roger Daltry.
I've read maybe 60 out of 100 answers to that question. Yes, Van Halen and Ashlee Simpson were pretty bad too. But nothing comes close to Grace Slick's self-immolation with Jefferson Starship on June 3, 1978, in Hamburg, Germany.
Her maiden name was Grace Wing (born October 30, 1939). In 1961 she married Jerry Slick. They remained married until 1971.
Of her first five albums, three reached number one on the Billboard charts. Grace Slick was the queen of rock and roll.
Wikipedia does not do justice to the sheer horror of the events in Hamburg in 1978.
“During Jefferson Starship’s 1978 European tour, Slick’s alcoholism became a problem for the band. The group had to cancel the first night in Germany because she was too drunk to perform, which ended up causing a major commotion. She performed the following night [in Hamburg] with the band, but became so intoxicated that she couldn’t sing. She lashed out at the audience, mocking Germany for losing World War II. Then, she made sexual gestures and advances, both towards girls in the audience and towards her bandmates.”
