At the end of his days in Churchill's house in London, it was very quiet. He was 90 years old and it was late 1964. He had been a victim of a number of strokes over the years and his health was completely broken. All day most of the time he sat by his window, all wrapped up in a nice thick blanket, watching his little pet bird Toby.
His son-in-law, Christopher Soames, visited him on January 10, 1965 for dinner. His face was tired and he replied his final words: "I'm so bored with it all", Churchill looked at him.
Five days later, Jan. 15, he had another big stroke. This time he went straight into a deep coma and never woke up again.
His family did not leave his room. His wife Clementine and his children were by his bed, and Lord Moran, the doctor who had seen him, had his pulse constantly monitored. Outside on the street, many common people stood in the cold wind waiting for any news. The workers of the city even placed a thick layer of straw on the road in front of the house, to prevent the cars from making noise.
Lastly, on January 24, 1965, he died.
This date has one crazy element. His father, whose name was Lord Randolph Churchill, died on the exact same date January 24 in 1895. Many years ago, Winston told his friends that he would die on the same day as his father. Then no one credited him; and he was right.
The world was struck aback when the news was released, and leaders from all around the globe came to London for his grand state funeral.
