After being ambushed in Tombstone on 28th December 1881, Virgil Earp left the area and headed to his parent's home in Colton, California. Despite the loss of the use of his right arm, he continued to work. In 1882, Virgil was employed by the Southern Pacific Railroad. His job was to guard the tracks, because it was the time when Southern Pacific tried to stop the California Southern Railroad from constructing a crossing along the Colton tracks. In 1886, Virgil opened his own private detective agency but the business didn't last long. On 11th July 1887, he was elected Colton's first City Marshal and was reelected the following year. In 1895, Virgil became involved in mining in Prescott, Arizona. This suddenly came to an end, following a bad accident which took Virgil several weeks to recover from. In January 1905, he was hired as a deputy sheriff in Esmeralda County, Nevada. The job didn't last long, due to Virgil contracting pneumonia on two occasions. The first bout led to a temporary recovery. On 19th October 1905, Virgil Earp passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Goldfield. His final resting place is in Portland, Oregon.
