Going back to 1916, he managed a “WTF?” moment while commanding a cavalry unit under Pershing, during the Mexican Expedition.
As a 2Lt, Patton had written the US Army’s last manual of swordsmanship, a frankly barking-mad piece of work that completely ignored guards and parries in favour of all-out attack. As a cavalry officer, he tried to order his unit to charge Mexican forces with drawn sabres: Pershing overrode him and the attack went in on more conventional, less suicidal lines (horses for mobility, feet for fighting with carbines and revolvers, no mad sword-in-hand gallops)
He was smart enough to recognise the value of the tank and bought into it big-time… but also decided that tank crew needed to look like extras from the old “Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe!” Saturday-morning serials…
