The oldest living person in the world is around 120. How does the average 80-year-old person feel about the fact that they could potentially live another 40 years?
Once, I asked my grandfather if he thought he would make it to 100.
I was about 10 at the time, and quite attached to him. I really wanted him to live to 100. “Maybe,” he responded, “but I doubt it. I started smoking when I was 10, drinking when I was 12 and when I was fifteen I had three different part-time jobs, while studying. I never slept for more than 5 hours a night until retirement.”
“It was a different time,” he continued, “and people did not take care of themselves when I was young. You know when I was an naval engineer, they made us take our wedding rings off when going into the engine room. Do you know why? Because the gold would melt off of our fingers with some of the chemicals we were working with. And there was asbestos in everything. Once I fell from the deck until the cargo space below, a full 25 meters, flat on my back. A man was shot in the back of the head half a meter away from my face when I was mailing a letter to your grandmother, I was in Cuba at the time… I think it was an assassination…”
