Stanley Watras is probably a name that no one will know, but there is a really curious story connected to him that could remind you of Homer Simpson.
Stanley, like Homer, worked in a nuclear power plant in the USA, in Limerick Pennsylvania.
In that plant, every day, each employee was asked to go through a radioactivity detector to make sure they did not introduce radioactive substances into the environment, as well as obviously safeguarding their health.
However, one day the detector gave an alarm when Stanley went through it.
The detector had detected a high presence of radioactive material on him, the problem was that Watras was going to work and not returning home!
It turned out that the source of radiation was his apartment, at first it was assumed that Stanley had stolen some radioactive material and brought it home, but it turned out that the radioactivity was actually present in the house because it was rich in Radon gas. Stanley did not know it but he had bought a house that was only 10 meters from a vein of Uranium.
Radon is a radioactive gas formed from the decay of uranium, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer, behind only smoking.
It was estimated that Stanley would have suffered the same damage if he had smoked 135 packs of cigarettes a day!
Edit: (I left a piece of history, the final one)
In 2015, Stanely and Diane Watras were still living in their home. Despite the dire predictions of experts when radon was discovered in their home, none of the five family members died of lung cancer. Apparently the radon mitigation system installed in their home did its job.
