While Edi was pregnant with Andrea, she suffered from appendicitis.
When her treatment was finished, doctors advised her to abort Andrea, claiming he would be disabled. Despite their pressure, Edi embraced Andrea’s life with unconditional love.
Andrea has publicly shared the story of his mom’s heroic decision to protect him:
“A young pregnant wife has been hospitalized for a simple attack of appendicitis. The doctors had to apply ice to her stomach and when the treatments ended the doctors suggested that she abort the child. They told her it was the best solution because the baby would be born with some disability. But the young brave wife decided not to abort, and the child was born. That woman was my mother and I was the child.” —Andrea Bocelli
Edi remained a steadfast mother when Andrea became blind at age 12 and continued to support him as he became a world-class tenor.
“My mother has always been by my side. She has supported and encouraged my artistic ambitions, even when few people believed I had a chance to break through as an artist; I was just a young man from the countryside, with no connections in the entertainment industry.”
The world has Edi Bocelli to thank for her son and his beautiful voice.
“I hope this could encourage many mothers that sometimes find themselves in difficult situations. In those moments when life is complicated, but want to save the life of their baby.” —Andrea Bocelli.
