Have you ever discovered a hidden strength or strategy in your parents that you misunderstood as weakness when you were younger?
It was definitely a surprise to observe my quiet, mild-mannered father react in that manner.
My sister and I hopped in the car with Dad. He wanted to purchase something downtown and we loved spending time with him. After parking the car, we tagged along behind him chatting away in typical fashion.
Dad holding Karen and me years before the event took place. He was gentleness and patience itself.
We came to the shop but there was a man standing in the doorway. We expected him to move as we stood before him, but he didn’t. Now, this was about eleven o’clock. Dad offered an, “Excuse me.” But he ignored us.
I saw Dad inhale, straighten his shoulders just a bit, then press us behind him. This is what he said, “You’re drunk. We want to go into the shop so you need to step aside.”
The man meekly stepped down and crossed the street. When we left, my eyes drifted up and down the sidewalk but he hadn’t returned.
We’d never heard that tone of voice from Dad nor did we ever hear it again. It was fascinating to observe a person who never raised his voice speak in such a manner. Dad knew what it would take and didn’t hesitate to use it.
