One thing that always stays with me and really breaks my heart is the way the SS used music to help commit their crimes during the holocaust. It is a very dark truth.
Most people believe that music is for joy so in the case of the death camps such as Treblinka, they were used to control. The SS made prisoners play their violins or accordions directly in front of the gas chambers. They did this for a horrible reason to make a sound wall. They wanted music that would even drown out the screams inside so that the people waiting in the line did not panic and try to fight back. It made mass murder appear to be an ordered process.
In Auschwitz it was even more deceptive. They had orchestras that were comprised of prisoners that had to play happy tunes or waltzes when trains arrived. Imagine if you were a scared mother or father getting off a train and heard a beautiful song. It was a ploy to have you feel safe so you would walk silently towards what they referred to as showers.
I tend to think of Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, who was a cellist in one of those bands. She said that her instrument had saved her life but she had to play it whilst watching thousands of people walking to their deaths. To use something so beautiful to disguise something so evil is the worst kind of cruelty. We must never forget about these stories.
