The Germans took control of Tunisia in 1942. While Khaled Abdul-Wahab, who was rich and a 31-year-old Tunisian, was eating dinner out one day, a German officer got drunk and bragged that he would attack a local Jewish girl. Khaled knew that girl and her family.
Khaled did not argue with him and even offered the man more wine. As soon as the dinner ended, Khaled rushed to his car and drove away to a safe place. He told twenty-five people, including his parents and a baby, to take nothing and go with him to his family farm for safety. There, Khaled protected them by hiding them in the empty rooms and barns for four months. Whenever they needed something to eat, he brought food to them. Once, a drunk soldier attacked the farm, and Khaled did not become afraid. Holding his gun, he chased him away.
When the British army arrived there in 1943, all twenty-five people were returned to their families. Khaled returned to his peaceful life and did not say anything about what he had done during the war. The man died in 1997 without telling anyone about his brave act. Ten years later, Khaled's daughter found a newspaper article and understood what her father had done. Even though he received no rewards or honors, many people are alive today because of Khaled.
