Connie Francis and Bobby Darin started off as a professional partnership, then they became a couple in love. They met in 1956 when Connie was a struggling singer and Bobby was a struggling writer. They worked on some songs together and fell in love. She was 19.
There was, however, a fly in the ointment. Connie’s father George. A no-nonsense disciplinarian who would mould Connie’s career and considered himself Connie’s guardian in everything. He forbad her to date anyone and he had not even allowed her to attend her own prom. The only important thing was her career.
When he learned that Bobby had convinced her to run away with him in order to elope he took a gun to the young man and threatened him. Bobby got the message.
In interviews today Connie says Bobby was the love of her life and she should have run away and married him. She was to marry and divorce four times, the longest four years, and the shortest four months.
‘'Bobby was my first and last love. I never really loved anyone the way I loved him. He was dynamic and I trusted him completely, but we were star-crossed lovers. He was such a kind man who didn't have an ounce of prejudice or bigotry in him and he was one of the smartest men I ever met.’'
Bobby had suffered severe bouts of rheumatic fever as a child which had damaged his heart. Even as a young man he had to have oxygen tanks on standby. He had open heart surgery in 1971 where he received two valves. Failure to take proper medication before a visit to a dentist led to sepsis and a further decline in health, another hospital visit to replace the valves. He did not recover from this surgery and died in 1973 aged 37.
