Rozaliya “Roza” Mildvorf was born on August 18, 1938, in the city of Odessa, Ukraine.


 Her parents were Jewish and named Monya and Yelizabeta Leya.


Roza was only three years old when everything changed. In October 1941, Romanian soldiers took over Odessa. Romania was fighting on the same side as Nazi Germany.


On October 22, a bomb went off inside the Romanian army headquarters. Nobody knows for sure who did it, but the Romanians instantly blamed the Jewish people and communists who lived in the city.


The next few days were pure horror. Soldiers started rounding up Jews and hanging them in the streets. In one single day, more than five thousand people were killed.


Little Roza, her mom, and her dad were forced into a group of survivors marched to old warehouses and barns outside town. A three-year-old girl must have been so frightened and confused, holding tight to her parents’ hands.


Once the buildings were packed with people, the soldiers locked the doors, poured gasoline, and set everything on fire. They shot at the roofs and walls so bullets rained down inside. Anyone who tried to run out was shot dead.


Around twenty thousand people died in those burning buildings. Three-year-old Roza and her parents were among them. They were burned alive.


May Roza and her family be remembered with love and blessings.


We must never forget: the Nazis were not the only ones who did this. Romanian soldiers, police, and ordinary people helped make the murder of Jews happen faster and on a bigger scale. Many countries worked together to make the Holocaust as terrible as it was.

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted.  She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 After World War II, some SS soldiers were tried and either executed or imprisoned, while others escaped or were let go. After the Waffen-SS killed American prisoners of war in 1944, American troops were told to shoot any SS members they saw, even if they tried to surrender.The Allies learned that the SS was targeting Jews and advised Jewish soldiers to change the religion on their dog tags or take them off.  The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by.  No celebrations and parades were dealt with when German soldiers came back after 1945. The majority found the country lying in heaps of bricks and smoke. Many had spent time in Soviet prison camps, and they spent the next decades of their life not returning home until the middle of the 1950s. By the time they got home, they were not known to them.
