Is there a noticeable difference between 20+ years old soldiers and 30+ year old soldiers?


 There is a big difference. In 1969 in Army Basic Training before the Nam, I had played rugby in college and was in shape. I had also lettered in college cross country and track, so I ran intervals on my days off. In contrast, nobody ran in those days , particularly my fellow 18 year old draftees from Appalachia or the inner city. In Basic I won the Physical Fitness Championship against 250 other trainees, and also the Obstacle Course long before they started Tough Mudders. It was a different story in 1982 when I went to the Infantry Officers Basic Course at Ft. Benning, a course just like Basic except 6 months instead of 2. There, I was the second oldest at 34, and the competition was mostly 21 year old recent graduates of Officer Candidate School, who had just been doing the same thing for 6 months. Even though I was still in the top third of runners, my strategy shiifed from dominance to survival. There was only one other Vietnam veteran, and we used everything we learned over there to survive. For example, when we did a live fire exercise moving uphill against popup targets, I told my group stay on line and watch your feet. The leader of the next group, who had already chastised me for not being gung ho enough, told his group “Charge!” and they took off up the hill. They were immediately off line and could have shot each other. But they did not last that long. The leader promptly stepped in a hole and broke his leg. Then their formation broke up as they all rushed over to rescue him, with live weapons pointing in every direction, no weapons on safe, and nobody posted on overwatch facing up the hill for possible counterattack.  She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. She died in 1915 and is buried in a cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

Lena Baker was a Black woman who worked as a maid.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 After World War II, some SS soldiers were tried and either executed or imprisoned, while others escaped or were let go. After the Waffen-SS killed American prisoners of war in 1944, American troops were told to shoot any SS members they saw, even if they tried to surrender.The Allies learned that the SS was targeting Jews and advised Jewish soldiers to change the religion on their dog tags or take them off. However, taking off the dog tags often made them look even more Jewish. When Nazi Germany surrendered in 1945, Allied forces needed to identify SS soldiers who were surrendering.  The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by. The catastrophe motivated Germany to prepare heavy reversible winter parkas, white on the outside and gray on the inside, and so on. By 1944 and 1945 Germany had ran out of resources.  No celebrations and parades were dealt with when German soldiers came back after 1945. The majority found the country lying in heaps of bricks and smoke. Many had spent time in Soviet prison camps, and they spent the next decades of their life not returning home until the middle of the 1950s. By the time they got home, they were not known to them. During many years, wives had learned how to survive and take the family by their own. The children did not know the man standing before them that was skinny, fatigued.
