 “Captain, see this eagle? I’m a full ‘Bird’ Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, and this symbol here is a Caduceus—it means I’m a nurse, trained in surgery. Now take me to your wounded!” He looked at her and said, “Yes ma’am. Follow me.”

It was just before Thanksgiving in 1967. We were flying back and forth, carrying dead and wounded soldiers from a big fight west of Pleiku. By noon, we had run out of body bags. The inside of the Chinook helicopter was in bad shape—bloody, messy, heartbreaking.

Then we suddenly heard a strong woman’s voice in the back of the helicopter.

There she was—Martha Raye, the famous singer and actress. She had on Special Forces gear: a Green Beret, jungle uniform, and no flashy markings. She was helping carry wounded men onto the helicopter, and even loading the dead. “Maggie,” as the troops called her, had been visiting her Special Forces friends out in the field.

We were low on fuel but made it back to the Air Force hospital at Pleiku.

While we were unloading the wounded, one smart-mouthed Air Force captain said to her, “Ms. Raye, with all these dead and wounded, there’s no time for your show!”

That’s when she stood tall, pointed at the eagle on her uniform, and said, “Captain, see this eagle? I’m a full-bird Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. And this badge means I’m a nurse, trained in surgery. Now take me to your wounded.” He stood straight and said, “Yes ma’am. Follow me.”

Martha Raye didn’t just sing for the troops—she served beside them. She went to Vietnam many times to be with her beloved Green Berets. They called her “Col. Maggie,” and some even called her “Mom.”

When she passed away, she was honored with a military funeral. Just like she wanted, she was laid to rest alongside the soldiers she loved so much... Continue reading

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. She died in 1915 and is buried in a cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by.
