Some African slaves escaped and took refuge with the Indigenous Americans.
Sometimes they were free and sometimes they became their slaves. At times a mixture of both.
I’m Black American and have a bit more Indigenous American ancestry than the usual and that was because on maternal side my ancestors were taking refuge with the Chickasaw and apparently there was a big stink, some kind of conflict with the nation and apparently there was this big storm too, so they left Oklahoma for Mississippi and when they left, a Chickasaw woman came with them because she was in love with one of my Black ancestors. That’s the story. I’m sure many Americans have some romanticized story like that but who knows if it is true.
I’m not sure about my paternal side, there’s no story but my dad has like 36% Native American ancestry. He is descended from Creole people of color. People either think he’s Black, Arab or Mexican. lol. Back in the day my dad had this big Afro but his curl pattern is all but gone now. I have my dad’s hair and I’m already noticing my curls losing their spring. I’m pretty bummed about that but it appears genetic.
One of these days I’m going to hire a professional genealogist because I’ve hit a wall after only two years of research.
