Who were some of the most evil Nazi SS officers?
The question is smart. There are millions of people who are familiar with the big names or those of Himmler but there were thousands of bad men who ran the SS. Small names are fascinating, as their wickedness was singled out.
First is Karl‑Otto Koch. He was the chief of large camps like Buchenwald. Koch is also a distinguished thief who embezzled huge sums of money and property in the SS system. In order to hide his corruption he even killed other people including a camp doctor. The weird part is that SS apprehended him due to his theft and killed him before the war was over. They murdered him due to simple theft which brought shame to Nazi as opposed to the millions of murders they had caused.
Second, take an example of Martin Sommer, the so-called Hangman of Buchenwald. He was a menial guard yet turned into an actual monster. He served in the camp prison enjoying torture. He did not just obey, he worked his own sadistic fantasies. He bound the ropes of prisoners at the backs and suspended them over time leaving them to be crippled forever. This man is a perfect representation of the personal sadism that was hands on and transformed everyday life in the camp into a nightmare.
And finally, there is one of the most vicious women guards, Irma Grese. She had served in Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen. At a highly tender age, she had carried a whip and a dog everywhere, administering inexpensiable beatings, and was pleased to choose victims to the gas chambers. She demonstrated how certain women were cold and delighted to participate in the most horrible crimes carried out by the Nazis.
