What was the greatest thing that you ever did for a friend?
I had a good friend at art college in London. Erik was Norwegian, but had been brought up mainly in the UK.
(Erik is on the left, me on the right. It's the 70's, so hence the flares).
Anyway, my first job was working for a big international advertising agency in Frankfurt. I was very excited about the new job, the start of my career, a new country etc, but by the time I got there to start, the guy who had hired me had been sent to Oslo.
Erik hadn't found a job in London so I put him in touch with the Oslo guy and he was offered a job there. So Erik always said that I got him his first job. Actually he got himself his first job, all I did was point him in a certain direction.
Anyway, many, many years later I am at the end of my working life, doing some lecturing at a French college in London, and they ask me if I know anyone who can run a course in magazine design. Actually I do: Erik.
So now he says I got him his first and last jobs. I still think that's a stretch, but we are old friends and we don't argue over things, except perhaps the bill.
