We were both 20 years old.


 We were on vacation in Riva del Garda. We met at a dance on the beach.


I had arrived that afternoon. For him it was his last night in Riva because the next day he was going to Sweden with his friends.


His friends left. He stayed for me and at the end of the holidays he accompanied me to Carpi, my city, to meet my parents.


Then he took me to Milan to meet his family.

We were very much in love.

After military service we got married and I left my city to live in Milan.


We had a beautiful baby girl and a happy marriage, lots of friends and a quiet life, until during a short holiday in Prague with our best friends, a truck crashed into our car and everyone died except me.

She was seriously injured, but alive.

I recovered, but my life was never the same.

Time passes and softens the pain, and then my daughter got married and gave me four beautiful grandchildren, and my heart is all for them.

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. She died in 1915 and is buried in a cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

Lena Baker was a Black woman who worked as a maid.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by.
