On July 14, 1939, actor Tyrone Power married a French actress known as Annabella.
It was Tyrone’s first marriage, but Annabella’s third. His movie studio wasn’t happy about it. The boss, Darryl Zanuck, even offered Annabella a big movie deal if she didn’t marry Tyrone.
But they went through with it anyway. The wedding took place in the beautiful garden of French actor Charles Boyer’s home. On the left in the wedding photo was best man Don Ameche. On the right was the bridesmaid, British actress Pat Paterson, who was Boyer’s wife.
Tyrone and Annabella’s marriage didn’t last. There were many reasons: they were often apart because of work, they struggled to have a son—which Tyrone really wanted—and the start of World War II made Annabella sad and scared because her family was still in France. They ended up divorcing in 1949.
Still, they stayed friends. In 1958, while Tyrone was in Spain filming Solomon and Sheba, he invited Annabella to visit. Just about a week after she left, he died suddenly of a heart attack.
Annabella later said, “It’s an unbelievable tragedy for all of us who knew and loved him—but most of all, a tragedy for Ty. He was finally about to have the thing he wanted most—a son.”
His wife at the time, Deborah Power, gave birth to a baby boy just two months after Tyrone’s death.
