Ellen Elliot Jack was born in New Lentern, Nottingham, England, on November 4, 1842. When she was a little girl, a gypsy queen told her she would have a life full of both pain and wealth. It sounded like just a story, but those words turned out to be true. Ellen met her future husband, Charles E. Jack, in 1860 while on a steamship called the James Foster.


After they married, Ellen and Charles lived in New York. Soon after, Charles left to be a Navy captain during the Civil War. While he was gone, Ellen had their first daughter. After the war, she had a son. Sadly, both children died from scarlet fever. Later, she had two more daughters, but lost one of them to the same sickness. Not long after, her husband died from heart problems.


After all this sadness, Ellen decided to move west. She left her living daughter with her sister-in-law and went to Gunnison, Colorado. There, she opened a busy and successful boarding house and started looking for silver and gold in the mountains. On one trip, Ellen found a rich silver mine and named it the Black Queen.


The mine brought her success, but also problems. Many men tried to win her heart, but she only loved one man—Walsh—who turned out to be a trickster. He tried to steal all her money but failed.


Ellen was very good with pistols and rifles and had to use them more than once. Life in the rough mining towns was dangerous, and she was always ready to protect herself. She was arrested several times, but each time it was for a good reason—whether she was defending herself from thieves, cheaters, or attackers.


Ellen spent the rest of her life searching for treasure in Colorado. People say she always carried two things with her: her pick-ax and her pistol.

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. She died in 1915 and is buried in a cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

After the Waffen-SS killed American prisoners of war in 1944, American troops were told to shoot any SS members they saw, even if they tried to surrender.The Allies learned that the SS was targeting Jews and advised Jewish soldiers to change the religion on their dog tags or take them off.  The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by.
