Ed Sullivan was one of the most important music impresario’s of the 20th Century.


 The list of music icons from every genre to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show includes Buddy Holly, BB King, Ella Fitzgerald, Elvis Presley, James Brown, Johnny Cash, Louis Armstrong, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and the list goes on.


Sullivan defied pressure to exclude black entertainers or to avoid interacting with them on screen. "Sullivan had to fend off his hard-won sponsor, Ford's Lincoln dealers, after kissing Pearl Bailey on the cheek and daring to shake Nat King Cole's hand.”


His famous tag line was — “Tonight, we have a real big show.” And it always was.


He is pictures here with Ella Fitzgerald and a man who looks in profile like Bill Robinson.


Ed Sullivan was an early supporter, and had her as a guest on the fifth episode of The Ed Sullivan Show. On July 18, 1948, the television audience was introduced to the charismatic jazz singer. Ed partnered her with vaudeville legend Bill “Bojangles” Robinson. As Ella scatted, Robinson tap-danced. This was an early example of Ed’s attempt to bring vaudeville to television, and to have something for everyone. Ella said in an interview about Ed, “His was one of the first shows that gave everybody a chance to be seen, and heard. And that was like a new beginning.”


The last of Fitzgerald’s eight appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show was on November 23rd 1969. She stepped onstage wearing a shimmering red dress and sang, “You Better Love Me” and “Open Your Window.” Miss Fitzgerald said about Ed: “I think it was like what almost everybody felt. They trusted him. They believed in him. And I guess we loved him. And thank you for what you’ve done for me.

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. She died in 1915 and is buried in a cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

Lena Baker was a Black woman who worked as a maid.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by.
