They didn’t expect it, but my grandma was one of those cases.


 She was born in 1938, and she was her mother’s first pregnancy, so no one really knew what to expect. Everyone just thought she had gained some weight and told her to be more careful.


When she gave birth, two baby girls were born. As many people know, twins are often born early, before the full 40 weeks, and they’re usually much smaller than single babies.


The nurses washed the babies and wrapped them in blankets, then handed them to their mom. The doctor told her to take them home and enjoy the time they had left together because he didn’t think they would survive.


But the twins surprised everyone and lived to be about 55 years old. Sadly, they both passed away within just a few weeks of each other, from different causes.

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. Lena Baker was a Black woman who worked as a maid.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 After World War II, some SS soldiers were tried and either executed or imprisoned, while others escaped or were let go. After the Waffen-SS killed American prisoners of war in 1944, American troops were told to shoot any SS members they saw, even if they tried to surrender.The Allies learned that the SS was targeting Jews and advised Jewish soldiers to change the religion on their dog tags or take them off.  The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by. The catastrophe motivated Germany to prepare heavy reversible winter parkas, white on the outside and gray on the inside, and so on. By 1944 and 1945 Germany had ran out of resources.  No celebrations and parades were dealt with when German soldiers came back after 1945. The majority found the country lying in heaps of bricks and smoke. Many had spent time in Soviet prison camps, and they spent the next decades of their life not returning home until the middle of the 1950s. By the time they got home, they were not known to them. During many years, wives had learned how to survive and take the family by their own. The children did not know the man standing before them that was skinny, fatigued.
