 The photo dates back to 1991, when Linda Evangelista posed with seven other women for an advertising campaign. Up to this point everything would seem normal if it weren't for the fact that the photo taken in Sicily for an advertising campaign for the clothing company Kenar Enterprises Ltd, had deliberately highlighted the beauty of the evangelist by contrasting her with those of seven women who were obviously far from the canons of beauty of the top model. The company had told them that it was an anti-AIDS campaign and had paid them only 10,000 lire.

The advertising poster was cruelly renamed “Beauty and the Seven Beasts”.

In one fell swoop, all women, especially Sicilian ones, had been hit and denigrated.


One of the women involved in the deception took legal action against Kenar Enterprises. In 2000 the company was forced to pay 20 million lire as compensation for damages to the woman who, in the meantime, had died.

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd.  She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by.
