She gave him ten children.


She gave him ten children. She buried three of them with her own hands. She crossed the ocean with him, stayed by his side through fame and struggle, and kept a busy household running.
And yet, Catherine Hogarth — the wife of Charles Dickens — was pushed aside, blamed, and forgotten.

Dickens, praised as a great writer of the Victorian era, called her “fat, lazy, jealous, and dull.” He even shared their private troubles with the public, writing a letter that made him look like the victim. The world felt sorry for him. Few felt sorry for her.

But who wouldn’t be tired after ten pregnancies? Who wouldn’t gain weight or grieve deeply after burying children? Catherine was not weak — she was strong. She kept going.

Her marriage ended not because of her, but because Dickens fell in love with a much younger actress, Ellen Ternan. Divorce was nearly impossible at the time, so Catherine was made the one to blame. Dickens even built a wall inside their house to keep her apart from him.

One day, Catherine put on her hat, walked out the door, and never returned. She lost her children, her home, and her place in society.

Before she died, her only wish was for the love letters Dickens once wrote her to be published, to show the world she had been loved. That wish was never granted.

But her story still lives. Catherine Dickens was not a burden. She was a survivor.

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. She died in 1915 and is buried in a cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by.
