One girl was evacuated during the blockade of Leningrad. Her name was Lenochka.


 She was so little and exhausted, that she forgot her last name. She lost a whole family; mother, grandmother, elder brother...

A special group of skinny girls found her - they were going from apartment to apartment during a terrible blockade winter looking for children whose parents had died or were dying...

This is how they discovered Lenochka and could evacuate her. She didn't remember being carried across the ice with other children in a shaking truck, she didn't remember getting to the orphanage; she was little. Like a skinny midget with a big head on a thin neck...

And she refused to eat anymore. This is what happens with dystrophy. She was laying in bed or sitting in a chair by the stove. She was getting hot. And she kept her mouth shut. They thought Lenochka would die. Many children died already during the evacuation; severe exhaustion and no strength to live and eat. And to play. And to breathe...

One-legged topper, war veteran uncle Kolja, about twenty years old, unpacked a doll from an old towel. Somehow he cut it, folded it, sewn it and it became an ugly doll. He drew the doll's eyes and mouth with an indelible pencil. And a crooked nose.

He gave a doll to Lenochka and seriously said:

"You, Lenochka, cradle the doll. And teach her to eat well! You are now a mommy doll. Take good care of her. "

And this Lenochka suddenly grabbed a doll and pressed it together. She began to pet her with thin hands. At dinner, she fed the doll porridge and whispered something loving to her. And in the end, she ate porridge and a piece of bread herself...

And so Lenochka slept with the doll and warmed her by the stove, hugged her, and got upset because of her. Because of an ugly doll made of an old towel with painted eyes ...

The girl has survived. Because she couldn’t die; she had to take care of the doll, you know?

HAVING SOMEONE TO TAKE CARE OF IS A HUGE LIFE FOR SOME PEOPLE.

For people like this girl was. Who later became a nurse and lived a long life. And her hands were always busy. And she had a heart full of love.

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. She died in 1915 and is buried in a cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

Lena Baker was a Black woman who worked as a maid.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

After the Waffen-SS killed American prisoners of war in 1944, American troops were told to shoot any SS members they saw, even if they tried to surrender.The Allies learned that the SS was targeting Jews and advised Jewish soldiers to change the religion on their dog tags or take them off.  The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by. The catastrophe motivated Germany to prepare heavy reversible winter parkas, white on the outside and gray on the inside, and so on. By 1944 and 1945 Germany had ran out of resources.
