A female Soviet soldier has been captured by the Wehrmacht. 1941


 The Wehrmacht actually had direct orders to kill any female soldiers they came after as they saw such a thing as unimaginable and degenerate.

Given she obviously has not been shot yet, she would likely have been sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, where she likely died of starvation.


Female Soviet soldiers are one of the greatest examples of the myth of the "clean Wehrmacht" being tarnished. Several Wehrmacht generals were so insulted by fighting women that they ordered them to be executed immediately, including Güyher von Kluge and Walther von Reichenau.Because the Germans didn't have separate POW camps for women, if they weren't executed they were mostly handed over to the SS and sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp.


She was very likely raped and murdered as that was what the Wehrmacht tended to do on the eastern front

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service.  She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children.  The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place.
