In this photo, my mom had just turned 18.


 She was about to finish high school at a classical lyceum, where only eight students made it to graduation—two girls and six boys. Most of them were children of doctors, professors, or lawyers, but she was the only one whose parents were an electrician and a homemaker. My grandparents had only finished elementary school, and every day she had to wake up at five in the morning to take the bus with working men to get to school.


By her last year, her grandfather on her father’s side told her it was time to get a job. They were looking for a secretary—a well-paid, respectable role for a young woman. My mom was an excellent student and didn’t want to stop learning, but there wasn’t enough money for her to continue studying. Then one night, her father, my grandfather Lidio, called her aside and said: “This money was saved for your dowry. Take it and go to university. You can always buy sheets later.”


It was 1960, and my grandfather didn’t even have a middle school education. He had been an orphan from a young age, yet he was forward-thinking. He had two daughters, and when people told him, “Too bad you didn’t have a boy,” he would always answer that his daughters were the best gift life had given him.


My mom finished her degree in five years, studying in the mornings and tutoring in the afternoons to support herself. She became a teacher, and after retiring, she began writing books and editing theses—all because of a working-class father who, in 1960, chose to invest in her education instead of household goods.  She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. She died in 1915 and is buried in a cemetery in New Albany, Indiana.

Lena Baker was a Black woman who worked as a maid.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by.
