In 2009, famous Italian freediver Enzo Maiorca was diving with his daughter Rossana near the coast of Syracuse when something truly special happened.

As he was going deeper into the water, Enzo suddenly felt a soft tap on his back. When he turned around, he saw a dolphin—not there to play, but clearly asking for help.

The dolphin swam down, and Enzo followed. About 15 meters below the surface, they found another dolphin stuck in an old fishing net. Without wasting a moment, Enzo called to his daughter for a knife and carefully cut the net to free the dolphin.

As soon as it was free, the dolphin made a sound Enzo later described as “almost like a human cry.”

When they all reached the surface, Enzo and Rossana saw that the dolphin was a pregnant female—and just moments later, she gave birth right there in the open sea.

The male dolphin circled around them, then gently came up to Enzo, touched his cheek with its nose—like a soft kiss—and then swam away with his new little family.

She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service.  She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place.
