I saw something during my trip to India that I can never forget


 An elderly couple, both in their seventies, were sitting by the railway station, shining people’s shoes. They looked very tired. Their clothes were old and torn. People were yelling at them to hurry up, but they kept working silently.

There was something different about them. It felt like they didn’t belong to that kind of work. My train was delayed for two hours, so I had plenty of time to watch them.

I only had 600 rupees in my wallet. I wanted to help them somehow. But I felt they wouldn’t accept money directly — they were working, not begging. So I went to a nearby tea seller and asked him to give them tea and breakfast, and told him to say it was from someone who cared.

He looked at me and said, “Sahib, woh nahi lenge.” (Sir, they won’t take it.)

I asked him to try anyway. After ten minutes, he somehow convinced them to accept the food.


The tea seller then told me something that broke my heart.

“They’ve been coming here every day for the last six months. They used to be daily wage workers. They have five children who are all married and doing well in life. This couple worked so hard to raise their kids and give them an education. But now, not one of their children wants to care for them.”

“They are homeless,” he said quietly.

I remembered reading something similar in an article years ago. The words still echo in my mind:

"We spent 30 years working hard so our children wouldn’t have to live in slums like we did. Turns out we failed — not one of their homes has space for us.”

I don’t think I’ve seen anything sadder or more heartbreaking than this.

How might the alliances in Eastern Europe have looked if Nazi Germany focused on strengthening them after a leadership change in 1940?

 She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war. After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd. She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted. Lena Baker was a Black woman who worked as a maid.

 She was put on trial for killing her white employer, Earnest Knight, who she said tried to rape her. Lena claimed she killed him in self-defense, but an all-white, all-male jury convicted her, and she was sentenced to death. Her trial lasted only one day. Before she was executed, sitting in the electric chair, she said: “What I done, I did in self defense or I would’ve been killed myself. Where I was, I could not overcome it. I am ready to meet my God.” Lena was executed on March 5, 1945. She was the only woman ever executed in Georgia. She left behind three children. Her last words, along with her picture, are now displayed near the electric chair at a museum in Georgia State Prison in Reidsville.

 It came from actress Hedy Lamarr in the film Ecstasy also called Symphony of Love (Czech production 1933) which caused the first scandal in the history of cinema. Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr was naked, running through the trees and diving into a river. Then, there was a simulation of a sexual act. All from a great distance. It lasted only ten minutes but an American government commission was scandalized. The film was taken out of circulation and most of its copies were burned.  After World War II, some SS soldiers were tried and either executed or imprisoned, while others escaped or were let go. After the Waffen-SS killed American prisoners of war in 1944, American troops were told to shoot any SS members they saw, even if they tried to surrender.The Allies learned that the SS was targeting Jews and advised Jewish soldiers to change the religion on their dog tags or take them off. However, taking off the dog tags often made them look even more Jewish. When Nazi Germany surrendered in 1945, Allied forces needed to identify SS soldiers who were surrendering.  The German army entered the war in 1939 in high-quality uniforms of thick wool and with a dark-green collar. The leadership spent a lot to ensure that the soldiers appeared shiny and professional with a victory likely to come fast.It was different in 1941 when the invasion of Russia took place. The military was not well prepared to the extreme cold. Guy Sajer in his memoirs describes how the men were forced to wrap their feet in straw or steal clothes off the conquered men just to get by. The catastrophe motivated Germany to prepare heavy reversible winter parkas, white on the outside and gray on the inside, and so on. By 1944 and 1945 Germany had ran out of resources.  No celebrations and parades were dealt with when German soldiers came back after 1945. The majority found the country lying in heaps of bricks and smoke. Many had spent time in Soviet prison camps, and they spent the next decades of their life not returning home until the middle of the 1950s. By the time they got home, they were not known to them. During many years, wives had learned how to survive and take the family by their own. The children did not know the man standing before them that was skinny, fatigued.
