Today, We Remember Sharon Lane


 Army nurses in Vietnam worked long 12-hour shifts, cared for badly injured Soldiers, played cards to lift spirits, and made sure no American Soldier died alone. One of these brave nurses was 1st Lieutenant Sharon Lane—the only American woman killed by enemy fire in Vietnam.


Sharon was loved by both the Soldiers and her fellow nurses. She was a quiet, hardworking woman from Ohio, known for her kindness and dedication. Even on her days off, she volunteered in the ICU, taking care of the most critically wounded Soldiers.


She wasn’t sent to Vietnam—she chose to go. She wanted to help where she was needed the most, and that place was in the jungles of Vietnam.


But on June 8, 1969, the 312th Evacuation Hospital was hit by enemy fire. The attack killed two people and injured 27 others. Sharon was one of the two who lost their lives that day... Continue reading
