María Errázuriz helped save Jewish children during the Holocaust.
Born in Chile, María moved to France in the 1930s and served as a social worker at the Rothschild Hospital in Paris.After Nazi Germany invaded France in May 1940, German authorities took over the hospital. Recognizing the threat to Jewish patients, María was determined to protect them. María began smuggling Jewish children out of the hospital, avoiding inspection by pretending they were either dead or contagious.
She then secured temporary safe houses for them. Photos: Yad Vashem 21 Betty Frydman and her little brother, Marcel, had been arrested with their mother during a major roundup in Paris in July 1942. They were later transferred to the Rothschild Hospital.
One day, Betty found her mother's hospital bed empty-she had been deported to the Auschwitz-Birkenau killing center.
